Video Walkthrough

A virtual emulation inspired by the Yamaha SPX90 & SPX50D, Includes all the well known patches such as Reverse Gate, Symphonic, Gate Reverb, the pitch detune, the chorus bank, and fifteen distortion programs that run drive into reverbs, delays and modulation. In immersive mode V3RB-X5 becomes a full on surround toolkit with an 80s vibe.

50 SPX programs modeled

Reverb, 1 to 10

Rev 1 to 3 Hall, Rev 4 and 5 Room, Rev 6 to 8 Vocal, Rev 9 and 10 Plate.

Early reflections and gates, 11 to 15

Early Ref. 1, Early Ref. 2, Percussion E/R, Gate Reverb, Reverse Gate. The 80s snare and the shoegaze swell both live in this group.

Delay and echo, 16 to 20

Delay L R, Delay Short, Delay Long, Echo Short, Echo Long.

Modulation, 21 to 27

Stereo Flange, Chorus A, Chorus B, Chorus C, Stereo Phasing, Tremolo, Symphonic.

Dynamics and EQ, 28, 29 and 35

ADR-Noise Gate, Compressor, Parametric EQ.

Gated reverb, 30

Reverb & Gate, the full reverb tank through an output gate.

Pitch and pan, 31 to 34

Pitch A, Pitch B, Pitch C, Triggered Pan. Pitch C is the two-voice opposite detune, the SPX doubling trick that sat on vocals through the whole decade.

Distortion, 36 to 40

Mid-Band Drive, Heavy Metal, Light Dist., Chunky Rhythm, Smooth Drive.

Distortion hybrids, 41 to 50

Overdrive Hall, Distortion Room, E/R Distortion, Slide Gate, Delay Dist., Dist. Filter, Flange Dist., Chorus Dist., Phase Dist., Symphonic Dist. Drive into a second effect with a balance between the two. None of these existed on the SPX90.

Algorithmic Model

A physical unit was measured and characterized program by program: decay and tone across the band, modulation rates and depths, the shape of each distortion curve, and the noise floor underneath all of it. V3RB-X5 is an algorithmic model written to behave the way the hardware does, with every program's default values matching the hardware's own.

Hundreds of hours of critical listening contributed to creating the plugin, and even though we say it ourselves, it’s extremely close, find out for yourself by trying the free 14 day trial!

Beyond the hardware

  • Stereo in. The SPX was mono only. Panned sources now keep their place, and on a surround bus the room follows where the sound actually is.

  • MODERN mode. Top end that runs past where the 1987 converters stopped, oversampled distortion, reverb tails that move.

  • Three spatial modes. SURROUND is one room all around you. ROOM puts a bigger, slower space behind you. MOVE circles the effect around the room while it plays.

  • Tempo sync on the delays and echoes.

  • Level-matched programs. Click through all fifty without riding the output.

  • Modeled hiss, from a silent capture off the unit. Off by default, gated or continuous when you want it.

Available as a stereo edition, or an immersive edition that places the effect around the listener in layouts up to 9.1.6.

Upgrades from stereo to immersive edition available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Yamaha SPX plugin?
A Yamaha SPX plugin recreates the SPX rack effects Yamaha built in the 1980s. V3RB-X5 is modeled on the SPX90 and SPX50D.
Is this an SPX90 plugin or an SPX50D plugin?
V3RB-X5 is modeled on the SPX50D, and the SPX50D carried every SPX90 program except Pitch Change D. Anything reached for on an SPX90 has its equivalent here under the same name.
What is the difference between the Yamaha SPX90 and the SPX50D?
The SPX90 arrived in 1985 with thirty programs. The SPX50D followed in 1987 with fifty, using an identical effects engine. The extra twenty-one are distortions and distortion hybrids, aimed at guitar players.
Does it have the SPX Reverse Gate patch?
Yes. Program 15 models it. The SPX Reverse Gate is the reversed swell heard across shoegaze and 80s production, and it is one of the most asked-after SPX sounds.
What are Kevin Shields' SPX90 settings?
Reverse Gate with Room Size at its maximum of 20, Liveness at 6 or 7, Delay around 75 ms and Mix at 100%. Those settings load straight into V3RB-X5 program 15, which starts at the values the hardware stores.
Does it have the SPX Symphonic preset?
Yes. Symphonic is program 27 and Symphonic Dist. is program 50. Often written as SPX Symphony, it is the wide, slow chorus the hardware is known for on guitars and keys.
Can it do the SPX gated reverb snare?
Two ways. Gate Reverb is program 14, and Reverb & Gate is program 30, which runs the full reverb tank into an output gate.
Is the SPX plugin sampled, or does it use impulse responses?
It is an algorithmic model built from measurements of a physical unit, not a sample library. The early reflection programs replay a measured pattern at their stored settings, then build the pattern themselves as soon as you move a control, so every knob keeps working the way the hardware's controls work.
Does the SPX plugin work in surround?
The immersive edition does, in layouts up to 9.1.6. Every program fills the room, with FRONT, MIDDLE, BACK and TOP setting how much effect sits where. The stereo edition runs as a stereo plugin.
Will an SPX plugin work on guitar?
That is what the SPX50D was built for. Fifteen distortion programs respond to input level the way an amp does, and ten of those run the drive into a reverb, delay or modulation.
Is there a free trial?
Fourteen days, fully working, no card needed.
